Common Pump Questions, Problems & What to Check First
Posted by Lachlan McIntosh on
Pumps are at the core of many water systems — from homes and pools to farms and commercial sites. At Aqua Power, we work with pumps every day, and many of the problems we see are caused by incorrect pressure settings, lack of maintenance, or early warning signs being missed.
Below are the most common pump questions we’re asked, along with practical troubleshooting tips to help when a pump isn’t working as it should.
My pump isn’t working – what should I check first?
If your pump isn’t starting or has stopped working, check the basics first:
• Power is on and the safety switch hasn’t tripped
• Isolation switch is turned on
• The pump hasn’t overheated and shut down
• The pump is primed (if required)
• The water source hasn’t run dry
If the pump is humming but not starting, turn it off immediately. Continued running can damage the motor.
Why does my pump keep turning on and off?
A pump that turns on and off repeatedly is short cycling, one of the most common pump issues.
Typical causes include:
• Flat or incorrectly set pressure (accumulator) tank
• Water leaks in the system (toilets, irrigation, pipework)
• Faulty or incorrectly adjusted pressure switch
Short cycling should be addressed early to prevent premature pump failure.
What pressure should my pressure (accumulator) tank be set to?
Correct pressure tank settings are critical for pump performance and lifespan.
• Pressure switch systems:
Set the pressure tank 2–3 psi below the pump cut-in pressure
• Pressure controller systems:
Set the pressure tank just below the controller start pressure
(typically 25–30 psi)
Always set tank pressure with the pump off and water pressure released.
My pump is running but there is no water
If the pump is running but no water is coming through, the issue is usually supply-related.
Check:
• The pump is fully primed
• The water source hasn’t run dry
• There are no air leaks in suction pipework
• Foot valves or non-return valves are operating correctly
• Strainer baskets are clean and clear
Never allow a pump to run dry, as this can cause serious damage.
Why is my pump leaking water?
Pump leaks are common and often repairable if caught early.
Common causes include:
• Worn mechanical seals
• Loose fittings or unions
• Cracked or corroded pump housings
Leaks should be repaired promptly to avoid motor damage.
Is a variable-speed pump worth it?
A variable-speed pump can operate at different speeds instead of running at full power all the time.
Benefits include:
• Reduced power consumption
• Quieter operation
• Less wear on pump components
Variable-speed pumps are commonly used on pool systems and some house and commercial applications, depending on system requirements.
What pump maintenance should be carried out?
Regular pump maintenance improves reliability and extends pump life.
Recommended maintenance includes:
• Cleaning pump strainers and filters
• Checking pressure tank air charge annually
• Inspecting for leaks and unusual noises
• Verifying pressure switch or controller settings
• Ensuring the pump does not run dry
Aqua Power can carry out routine pump maintenance checks to help prevent breakdowns and costly repairs.
How long should a pump last?
With correct sizing, installation, and maintenance:
• Domestic house pumps: typically 7–12 years
• Pool pumps: typically 5–10 years
Most early pump failures are caused by incorrect pressure settings, frequent cycling, or dry running.
Can a pump be repaired or does it need replacing?
Many pump faults can be repaired if identified early.
Common pump repairs include:
• Capacitors
• Mechanical seals
• Bearings
• Pressure switches and controllers
If the motor is burnt out or the pump body is badly corroded, replacement may be the most reliable option.
What should I do if troubleshooting doesn’t fix the problem?
If you’ve checked the basics and the pump still isn’t working:
• If possible, bring the pump into Aqua Power for diagnosis
• If the pump cannot be removed, we can arrange a technician to attend site
Photos and a brief description of the issue are always helpful before inspection.
