Common Filtration Questions, Water Quality & What to Know First
Posted by Lachlan McIntosh on
Water quality is something many people only think about once there’s a problem — bad taste, odour, staining, or concerns about safety. At Aqua Power on the Sunshine Coast, filtration is a big part of what we do, and we’re often asked the same questions about drinking water, bore water, whole house filtration and ongoing maintenance.
Below are the most common filtration questions we’re asked, along with practical advice to help you choose the right system and look after it properly.
How do I know if my water is safe to drink?
The only way to know for sure is water testing.
Water can look clear and still contain bacteria, heavy metals, chemicals or other contaminants. Aqua Power offers water testing, including comprehensive laboratory analysis, to determine exactly what’s in your water and what level of filtration is required.
Testing is especially important for:
- Bore water
- Tank water
- Rural and acreage properties
- Anyone concerned about taste, smell or health
Can I filter bore water so it’s safe to drink?
Yes — bore water can be filtered for drinking, but it must be done correctly.
Bore water often contains bacteria, iron, manganese, hardness or other contaminants. Filtration usually involves a combination of sediment filtration, carbon filtration and UV disinfection, based on water test results.
There is no one-size-fits-all bore system. Correct testing and system selection are critical.
Why is chlorine added to town water, and can I filter it out?
Chlorine is added to town water to disinfect it and make it safe during distribution. While effective, it can affect the taste, smell and feel of water.
Yes — chlorine can be filtered out. Carbon filtration, such as Puretec systems, effectively removes chlorine while still allowing safe, clean water throughout the home or at a single tap.
Why choose whole house filtration?
Whole house filtration treats all the water coming into your home, not just drinking water.
Benefits include:
- Better tasting and smelling water
- Reduced chlorine exposure in showers
- Protection for plumbing and appliances
- Cleaner water for cooking, washing and bathing
Whole house systems are popular for families, sensitive skin, and anyone wanting consistent water quality throughout the home.
Can I have filtered water if I’m renting?
Yes. Under-sink filtration systems are a popular option for renters.
These systems provide high-quality filtered drinking water at a single tap and can usually be removed and taken with you when you move. It’s a simple way to avoid bottled water without making permanent changes.
Do you sell filtration systems for caravans and camping?
Yes. Aqua Power supplies Puretec filtration systems for caravans, motorhomes and camping setups.
These systems are designed to protect against poor water quality when travelling and are ideal for:
- Caravan parks
- Rural water supplies
- Unknown water sources
How much can I save by switching from bottled water to filtered water?
Many households spend hundreds — sometimes thousands — of dollars each year on bottled water.
Installing a filtration system can:
- Reduce or eliminate bottled water purchases
- Provide consistent, better-tasting water
- Reduce plastic waste
For most families, a filtration system pays for itself over time.
How often do I need to change my filter cartridges?
Filter change intervals depend on:
- The system installed
- Water quality
- Water usage
As a general guide:
- Sediment and carbon filters are typically changed every 6–12 months
- UV lamps are changed annually, even if still glowing
Regular filter changes are essential to maintain water quality.
How do I know when my filters need changing?
Some systems include pressure gauges or indicators, but many don’t show obvious signs.
Common indicators include:
- Reduced water flow
- Change in taste or smell
- Time elapsed since last service
Keeping to a regular service schedule is the most reliable approach.
Can Aqua Power change the filters for me and remind me?
Yes. Aqua Power can supply and change filters and set up service reminders so filters and UV lamps are replaced on time.
This removes guesswork and helps ensure your system continues to perform as intended.
What are maintenance kits, and are they cheaper?
Maintenance kits are pre-packaged kits containing everything needed to service your system.
Puretec maintenance kits typically include:
- Replacement UV lamp
- Sediment filter
- Carbon (odour and taste) filter
They are more cost-effective than buying components individually and ensure the correct parts are used.
